Assesments - Rising Stars


During 2016-17 we made the decision to move away from Assertive Mentoring. We had been using it since 2012 but were finding with the new National Curriculum of 2014, that it was not working for us. The main principle of Assertive Mentoring being to move children up through the levels/stages did not sit with the new curriculum’s principles of deepening learning.

Throughout the year we trialled the Rising Stars PIRA tests in Reading and in the Summer the staff agreed to use Rising Stars as a means of assessing children’s attainment at the end of every term in Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. The children completed end of year tests in the Summer to provide us with a baseline for September 2017.

We are continuing to use the tracking grids from Assertive Mentoring which we have amended, to track children’s progress in Reading, Writing and Maths. At the end of each unit teachers will ./x to show children’s understanding of objectives (. no understanding / some understanding x understood). We believe this aspect of the Assertive Mentoring system is vital to inform planning and next steps. In Writing we will be assessing independent work completed at the end of each unit.

In the Summer of 2017, the annual reports to parents were changed to show whether children were working towards, at or exceeding expectations.

2017-2018 will be the first year of the new assessment system – we hope it meets our high expectations.
